Honoring the Benevolent ❤️ of Suzanne Sanon Denis
(1940-2024)
Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Suzanne Sanon Denis, transitioned on August 28, 2024, at the age of 84 after enduring a long and hard battle with debilitating illnesses.
Suzanne was born in one of the most beautiful landscape regions in southern Haïti, known as La Montagne, Jacmel. Her incredible life journey and inner strength started soon after losing her mother, Napéline Jean-Jacques within six months of her life. Napéline was often described as a great, intelligent, fearless, caring woman with a beautiful heart who knew her in her community. Her father, Verné Sanon, although a man of small stature was often described as a “bulldog” and a fierce protector of his family. It is safe to say Suzanne shared her parent’s genetic makeup to later blossom into the woman we have grown to know and love as an independent woman with a benevolent heart who was determined to fight till the end.
At a very young age, she arrived at the loving arms of the Lamarque family. Manman (Emilie) Lamarque embraced her as her daughter. There in the sweet smells of the family bakery, she found the love of baking and cooking. After her marriage to Sylvain, her new family was made at home as well with memories of afternoons eating “bonbon pannequets” (cupcakes).
Suzanne was kind, generous, God-fearing, with a charismatic personality. Her love for our Dad and her complete devotion to her children was immeasurable. She loved us unconditionally with all her heart. She took exceptional pride in her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her children Marie Myrtho ( Micheal) Denis Brudent, Frantz (Alexandra) Denis, and Patrick (Judith) Denis. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren Melissa Henry, Francesca Denis, Sebastien Denis, Jelani Denis, and Christina Denis, and great-grandchildren Ayden, Yaromir, and Noah. Her brother Hérve (Elsie) Sanon, her sister Gladys Placide, Nadine Pierre-Louis, her brother Georges Lamarque, her brother Henry Lamarque, her brother Anthony Lamarque, her brother Frantz Lamarque and her sister Jocelyne (Jeffrey) Birren. Her nephews Fayenot (Louiline’s) Jean-Jacques, and Francky André. Her Honorary daughter Sabrina Ladouceur, her nieces Stephania (Omari) Wiltshire and Claudine (Damas) Ladouceur, her grand nephew Gabriel Laurent, her cousin Chantal (Landry) Henriquez,
and sister-in-law Yolaine Denis. She was a grandmother-like figure to Benjamin Ladouceur, Jacob Ladouceur, and Samara Ladouceur.
She was preceded in death by her son Ronald Denis, her husband Sylvain Denis, her mother Napéline Jean-Jacques, her father Verné Sanon, her adoptive father Gerald Lamarque, her adoptive mother, Emilie Lamarque, her brother Patrice (Erisna) Jean-Jacques, her brother Préçois Jean-Jacques, her sister Eminette Sanon, her niece Fabiola Sanon, her adoptive son Yvon Ladouceur, her niece Locita Jean-Jacques, her aunt Marianna Muzak Pierrot, and her cousins Max Augustin Pierrot, and Andrélise Jean-Jacques.
Suzanne is best remembered by her loved ones, as a woman with a benevolent heart. She spent most of her free time in prayer, worshipping God, and giving thanks and praise to her ancestors. What made her someone special was her character. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing solitaire, listening to her favorite Haïtian compas music, and mostly spending quality time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She raised four (4) children, Michou, Ronald, Frantz, and Patrick in a happy home to be independent and thoughtful adults. Sue ( a term of endearment from her husband) was married for sixty-four (64) years to her soulmate, Sylvain, who preceded her in death recently. Our mother was the heart and soul of our family, and she will be dearly missed. Her life was her family and her family was her life. These hobbies and others brought her great joy and allowed her to connect with others who shared her interests. Above all, she was a very deeply spiritual human being with an incredible sense of self and profound respect for nature and the environment.
In Creole, there is an expression that says: “She is a Poto Mitan”, which means she is the person that keeps the home together, like a central pillar in a house that keeps her erect. She was a beautiful human being until the end. We will miss you deeply!
