Obituary for Serge Compere (1939 – 2025)
It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Serge Compere, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, who passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, at the age of 85. Serge was born on November 1, 1939, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to Celie Beaujin and Mercure Compere.
Serge’s life was defined by his commitment to service, knowledge, and a passion for helping others. He began his career in Haiti as a laboratory technician at Hôpital Militaire, a journey that would shape the rest of his life. In 1965, Serge moved to Canada, where he continued his work as a laboratory technologist. His quest for knowledge led him to New York City in 1969, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and later earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Biology from Long Island University, CW Post.
Serge’s professional journey in the United States began at Saint Vincent’s Hospital, where he worked for an incredible 41 years as a Clinical Biologist and Hematologist, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Over the years, he also worked as a supervising lab tech at Beth Israel Hospital and Woodhull Hospital. Serge’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to open his own medical laboratory, further solidifying his legacy in the medical community.
In addition to his work in the lab, Serge had a deep love for teaching. In the 1980s, he became a professor of laboratory sciences at a local community college, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of medical professionals.
Serge was a passionate advocate for the rights of workers. As a proud member of the 1199 union, he served as a delegate and arbitrator, fighting tirelessly for his fellow workers’ rights. Even after his retirement, Serge continued his work as an advocate, driven by a strong sense of justice and his unwavering belief in supporting others— without the expectation of compensation.
Serge is survived by his loving wife, Yanick Castor Compere, his children, Marjorie Compere Laurent, Luigi Serge Compere, Stacy Compere, and Sarah Duncan. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew Gerode Laurent, Carl Henry Laurent, and Kenny Steve Laurent, as well as his sister, Josette Momplaisir, and his extended family, including the Delva and Jean families, the Beaujin family, the Momplaisir family, the Castor family, the Dorce family, and the Laurent family.
Serge’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, both professionally and personally. He was a devoted husband, father, and mentor, whose wisdom, compassion, and dedication to others will never be forgotten. He leaves behind a world made better by his work, his kindness, and his relentless commitment to helping others.
