A CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE OF RHONDA DEFREITAS

Rhonda DeFreitas was born on March 21, 1964 in St. John’s, Antigua, the oldest child of parents Jonathan Beresford DeFreitas and Jacqueline DeFreitas. Rhonda had two children – her daughter, Shauna DeFreitas, and her son, Brandon DeFreitas. She married her husband, Christopher Samuel, in 2003. Rhonda grew up in Ottos in St. John’s, Antigua with her younger siblings Peachetta, Vaughn, and Angus. After a sojourn to Canada and a brief return to Antigua, she immigrated to the United States in 1983. As a young woman, Rhonda found her calling in nursing. Having made the decision to become a nurse, she worked hard to achieve her goal. She obtained an Associate’s degree in Applied Science in Nursing from Queensborough Community College, a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing from State University of New York at Brooklyn, and a Master’s of Science degree in Administration from Metropolitan College of New York (Audrey Cohen College). Rhonda was a nurse for thirty (30) years. She worked as a bedside nurse for many years, demonstrating the dedication and compassionate care for which nurses are known. After joining the ranks of hospital administration, she continued to render care to patients when needed. She most recently was employed at NYC Health & Hospitals/Queens as Associate Director-Care Management. She previously was employed at North Shore (LIJ)/Franklin Hospital, Island Peer Review Organization (IPRO), Winthrop University Hospital, New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens, and Flushing Hospital Medical Center. Rhonda was hardworking. She had the ability to set a goal, focus on that goal, map out a course of action, and take steps to achieve her goal. She was persistent and persevered until she accomplished what she set out to do. She was a promoter of women and believed in empowering women, in instilling confidence, and recognizing one’s worth. She was a mentor and was determined to bring younger people along. She was an avid supporter of breast cancer research and participated in breast cancer walks for many years. Rhonda was committed to her family. She believed in taking care of her responsibilities and did not shirk her duties. She did her utmost for her parents, children, husband, siblings, and friends. If she said she would do something, she did what she said she would do. She loved unconditionally. She was reliable, generous, and kindhearted. She also could be stubborn. She was an optimist to the very end. She had an impact on the lives of her family and friends that will endure. Rhonda is survived by her husband, Chris; her children, Brandon and Shauna; her sister, Peachetta deFreitas, and brother-in-law, Al Clasp; her brother, Vaughn DeFreitas, and sister-in-law, Marjuel Hedrington DeFreitas; her brother, Angus DeFreitas; nieces and nephews, including Jonathan DeFreitas, Sabrina DeFreitas, Gerard DeFreitas, and Maya Williams; Aunts Jennet Recille and Veda Thomas; cousins, including cousin Shani Recille Rodriguez; friends, including Noreen Smith, Ann Heslop, Virginia Robinson, Charlesworth Corbett and Cynthia Corbett, and many more. Rhonda, we will remember your beautiful smile and loving, generous spirit. We love you Rhonda, Mom, “Sis”. We will miss you always.
