Maureen Margaret Meehan, a long time Rockaway resident for over 30 years, passed away on August 22, 2023, she was 78 years old. Maureen earned a Bachelor Degree from Hofstra University and a Masters of Special Education Degree from Brooklyn College. She worked for over 25 years in the NYC school system. Maureen was an incredible teacher loved by her students and respected by her peers. She was devoted and patient with all of her students and deeply committed to improving their lives.
Once retired from teaching, she was able to spend more time with her beloved Shelties: Rockaway Rocket, Flash Gordon and Cleo. You could frequently see her out and about with her pups who were certified therapy dogs. They would visit local nursing homes and their arrival always brightened the day of the residents and staff. Other activities they loved to participate in were the local holiday parades in town. Her Shelties dressed in their holiday best often won medals for their adorable costumes and holiday spirit.
Another one of Maureen’s passions was the love of horses. She owned her own horse for many years, a Leopard Appaloosa she named Blue. She loved to ride western and shared her skills, knowledge and love of riding with her nieces and nephews. She also assisted in Equine therapy programs at local stables and worked with individuals who had special needs, emotional or behavioral problems and helped them to build confidence and trust in themselves.
Maureen was an intelligent, independent and courageous woman way ahead of her time. Positive and high spirited she brightened the lives of so many and she will be greatly missed. She is survived by a brother Kevin Barry; sisters: Nora, Patricia and Veronica; 7 nephews, 2 nieces and 3 great nephews,1 great niece and her sheltie Cleo.
