Marthe Marie Belfort Ledan, affectionately known as “Tato,” passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025, in Lindenhurst, New York, at the age of 87.
Born in St. Jean du Sud, Haiti, she was the youngest child of Montany Belfort and Elida Villarson, and sister to Andrée, Vanne, Ena, Brunelle, and Charles. From an early age, Marthe displayed a generous spirit and a strong sense of family that would guide her throughout her life.
At the age of 27, Marthe married the love of her life, Gardy Ledan, and together they built a life initially rooted in love, faith, and family. She became a devoted mother to her daughters, Elizabeth and Nicole, and a proud grandmother to Jamell and Janice. Though she was widowed at just 39, Marthe faced life’s challenges with remarkable strength, resourcefulness, and grace, dedicating herself fully to raising her family and nurturing those around her.
A hardworking and determined woman, Marthe built her life in the United States through dedication and service. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), offering compassionate care to those in need. She also shared her culinary talents as a caterer within the Haitian community, bringing people together through her food, warmth, and generosity. Along with her sister Ena, Marthe welcomed many family members and friends newly arrived from Haiti into their home. The house, 810 Linden Blvd, became a home, and the home became a community — a place filled with laughter, comfort, and the welcoming aroma of her meals.
Marthe’s love extended far beyond her immediate family. She deeply cherished her nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, godchildren, and cousins, each of whom held a special place in her heart. She nurtured her extended family (Belfort, Clergé, Franklin, Joseph, Lubin, Mazile, Norvil, Perpignan, Télémaque, Thys, Valentin and Villarson) with the same care she gave her own children, often offering guidance, support, and unconditional love. Her generosity, thoughtfulness, and readiness to help others made her a cornerstone in her family and community.
Her devotion to her Catholic faith was central to her life. She lived her faith daily through prayer, compassion, and service, finding joy in giving and comforting others. Her belief in God sustained her through both the triumphs and the trials of life, and she carried herself with quiet grace, humility, and gratitude.
Marthe will be remembered for her kindness, strength, resourcefulness, and unwavering devotion to family. She had a remarkable ability to turn ordinary moments into lasting memories, and her love of cooking and hospitality created a warm, welcoming environment that drew people together. The lessons she imparted — of generosity, resilience, and love — will continue to guide all who were blessed to know her.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:23
May her soul rest in eternal peace
