Marian Powell was born to the late James and Doris Batson on March 31, 1945, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Marian cherished and loved her family dearly. Along with her witty sense of humor, she also had a strong opinion which she voiced affectionately.
Marian was educated in the New Hanover County Public School System in Wilmington, NC, where she attended Williston Senior High School. Marian moved to New York in the 60’s and made her home in Brooklyn, NY where she and Larry raised their family before moving to Queens and finally Long Island, NY. Marian worked and retired from Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in 2009 after 20-plus years of service.
Marian’s greatest joy was spending time with family, traveling the world, planting flowers each spring, and decorating her home over and over again. She had the opportunity to share her joy of traveling with family on several trips around the world from England, Hawaii, Canada, France, and Italy to Bermuda.
On October 8, 2024, Marian was called home. She was preceded in death by her father James and mother Doris Batson, daughter Wanda (Ronnette) who she loved and missed deeply, sister Grenda (Gwen), nephews Michael, Lloyd(Tony), Carlos (Poppy), and niece Maryland (Mackie). She is survived by her devoted husband Larry who she affectionately referred to as “my man”, her devoted daughter and best friend Shelley (Vince), sons Virgil (Denise), Christopher, Tony (Keisha), and her baby boy Jamie Bruce, grandchildren who she loved immensely Shona (Tinka) Kevin known as Kaye (Jessica), Kelli, Kendall (Kendi-Wendi), Virgil Jr. (Storm), Imani, Cherokee, Tyla, Christopher Jr. (CJ), six great grand-children, Madison (Her Maddie), Kaylah, Gabriel, Omar, and Kairo. Marian leaves behind her siblings who she loved deeply Jacquline Scott (Nathaniel), James Batson (Ruth), Eliza Boykin (William), Gregory Batson (Raquel), Lucille Batson, Lewis Batson, Wayne Batson, and Paul Batson. Marian also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who affectionately called her “Aunt Mare”, cousins, family, and friends who she loved dearly. Everyone who loved her will miss her.
