John P. Sullivan Obituary

Sullivan, John Patrick, age 85 of Elmont, NY, suddenly on January 22, 2019. Beloved husband of Annette for more than 55 years. Dear son of Gertrude (Connolly) and John M. Sullivan. Loving and dedicated father of Claire, John (Sharon) of West Babylon, NY, and Steven (Karen) of Rochester, NY. Treasured grandfather of Nicholas, Matthew, Sarah, Christine and Abby and Great-Grandfather of Macallister. Loving brother of Trudy (Jack) Scully and brother-in-law of Jeannette (Ed) Kerrigan and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

John was born on January 17, 1934, in Manhattan, NY and raised in the Bronx. John graduated from Sacred Heart Seminary (High School) in Metuchin, NJ, and went on to earn double bachelor degrees in Chemistry and Mathematics at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL.  He taught Catholic High School for 4 years in Baton Rouge, LA and at McGill Institute in Mobile, AL before proudly enlisting in the Army in 1958 for 3 years.  John served in Allied Occupied Germany as an Intelligence Officer with Top Secret and NATO Secret (NS) clearances. After serving in the Army, John began working as a chemist at SuCrest Sugar Refinery for almost 25 years. Later he worked as a Mechanical Engineer for almost 15 years at the LIRR, retiring in 2000.

John was involved with St Boniface R.C. Church for over 52 years serving on the Parish Council as a President and member, as well as other various duties. He also served on the first Rockville Centre Diocesan Parish Council. John was very involved with the Alden Manor Civic Association for 50 years, serving as President for many years, as well as the CCC. He also devotedly served as a Boy Scout Leader for 8 years and as a Little League Head Coach. John volunteered for various school committees and remained involved in his community up until his last day.

John was a people person. He could connect with individuals from all walks of life and his many friendships reflected his ability to do so. John was a great listener who could empathize with people. He combined a high intelligence and vast knowledge with a great sense of humor.

Most of all John was devoted to his cherished wife Annette. He delighted in telling the story of how they met, wishing to meet a tall brunette while attending a dance at Cresthaven Country Club. He enjoyed life to the fullest whether traveling to many locations both domestically and internationally, attending musical performances, plays, etc., dining out with family or friends, or simply watching a movie at home just the two of them, holding hands and cuddling.  A truly remarkable man.  We shall not see his like again.

Reposing at O’Brien-Sheipe Funeral Home, 640 Elmont Road, Elmont, NY (corner of Dutch Broadway) on Friday 2-4pm and 7-9pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 9:30am at St Boniface R.C. Church, 631 Elmont Road, Elmont. Entombment to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
