JEAN MONICA LYNCH
~ BORN ~
[Mommy] Jean was born on October 17th, 1940, as Jean Monica Glasgow, in Georgetown, Guyana, South America. She was the last of nine (9) children, (6-boys and 3-girls) and the ‘baby’ of the family. Her father, Cecil Glasgow, was a carpenter and her mother, Marie Vincente Glasgow, took care of the children, and made artificial flowers for sale in the market.
~ EARLY YEARS/ TRAVEL ABROAD/ NURSING ~
[Mommy] Jean left Guyana at 18 years old to travel and study abroad. She went to France, making a ‘pitstop’ in Bordeaux. She said she liked it as it was quite beautiful – and they were known for their wine (of course some of the best wine in the world), and enjoyed her time there before making her way to London, where she embarked on a career that would be life-long and instrumental in our lives and all who knew her. Jean completed a rigorous nursing training program in London, where she did several rotations in various aspects of nursing. She was in the neo-natal, pediatrics unit - she was a surgical nurse assisting in operations – and she specialized in tropical and infectious diseases.
~ MARRIAGE/ CHILDREN ~
[Mommy] Jean met the love of her life, Lemuel Jerome Lynch, in London, while he too was studying abroad. As it would have it, she met ‘Lemmie’, (his nick name), at a wedding. They ‘courted’ for some time, got married and after trying for several years, she finally gave birth to her first child and son, Kurtison and about two years later, her second child and daughter, Gaylin.
~ LONDON TO TRINIDAD TO THE STATES… ~
After living in the UK for over 15 years, Jean left to live in Trinidad, her husband’s homeland. At the time, there was a shortage of nurses and due to her very specific skillset, qualifications, and kind heart, she was able to obtain a work visa. Lemmie accompanied her as they made the sacrifice for a better life in America with their children following shortly thereafter.
~ NURSING DEGREE IN THE US + R.N. SUPERVISOR ~
[Mommy] Jean received an additional degree in nursing when she came to the United States. She changed her focus and specialized in geriatric care, for the elderly – as she had a caring nature. She was a licensed Registered Nurse and a Supervisor of not one, but two floors at Silvercrest Nursing Care Center in Queens, NY. Her units or floors would always pass the State-wide examinations – as she took copious notes, knew all the issues of her patients, and lead a team of Health Care Professionals, who also cared. She received a multitude of accolades for her outstanding performances throughout her career.
~ RETIREMENT & BUILDING A HOME IN BARBADOS ~
After a long career in nursing for over 60 years, Jean was able to retire in 2004. Upon her retirement, Jean and Lemmie moved to Barbados where Lemmie’s mother was born. There, they built a home that was designed by their daughter and constructed while they still lived in the U.S. They lived there until 2017, at which point they both came back to the States and lived with their daughter. Sadly, Jean’s Lemmie passed in 2018 but she lived fully until her final days.
~ THE PERSON SHE WAS ~ LOVED ... ~
Daughter| Sister| Cousin| Aunt| Wife| Mother| Grandmother| Friend| Matriarch
[Mommy] Jean loved from within - was kind - generous - always willing to help someone and gave great advice, even if you didn’t ask. She threw the best, one-of-a-kind house parties and was a fantastic dancer! She will remain in our hearts forever.
[Mommy] Jean is survived by her two children, Kurtison R. Lynch and Gaylin M. Bowie and two grandchildren, Kriston J. Lynch and Indirxia R. Bowie.
