Celebrating a Life Well-Lived
Hubert I Brathwaite departed this world on Monday, June 16, at the age of 94 leaving behind a legacy of love for your family, a sense of purpose and responsibility to take care of yourself, and-cherished memories of eating almost every meal together. Hubert was born on September 22, 1930 in Georgetown, Guyana to the later Dorothy and Henry Braithwaite. He was the devoted husband to his beloved wife for 63 years Otis Alexandria Fenty Brathwaite and the father to his sons Colin and Derick.
In Guyana, Hubert distinguished himself by his dedication and commitment to the sport of Soccer. As on news paper put it, “the Braithwaite name ion Guyana football is legendary”. Hubert “Senor” Braithwaite center-back made his international debut for British Guiana against Trinidad in port-of-Spain in 1949. After several impressive overseas tours to Suriname [1951], Aruba [1952], and Brazil [1954], he was elevated to the national captaincy in 1958 when British Guiana toured Suriname. “And, in 1959 quadrangular tournament in Trinidad, Braithwaite was named the most outstanding defender”. His most memorable match came against Suriname in 1976 in Guyana’s World Cup qualifier debut.
Additionally, He also represented Guyana in rugby and volleyball. Hubert also served as a police officer with the Georgetown Police Force. In 1966 he immigrated to the United States and went to work for Baldwin-Gegenheimer, where he remained until his retirement in in early 2001.
Hubert is preceded in death by his brother and sisters James, Shirley, Elaine, Gwennie, and Gloria. He is survived by his Siblings Norma, Ashton and Gregory; In-laws Janet, Marjorie, Henry, Brenda, Joyce, Tahir, Cliff; Nephews and Nieces Renee, Brian, Felicia, Valarie, Ricky, Vanessa, Simone, Marilyn, Marcelle, Ashley, Gregory Jr., Anesia, Timothy, Sean, Abigale, Dillion, and countless family and friends all of whom will forever cherish his memory.
Though Hubert may no longer walk among us, his spirit will continue to shine brightly through the love he shared, the consistent endorsement to do more and to do better, and to never give up, or give in on anything and the indelible mark he left on this world.
Rest in peace, dear Hubert. You will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew you.
