Gwendolyn Ida Gardner
Was born January 3, 1935, to Beatrice Stewart Pitter and Thomas Emmanuel Pitter, in Manchester, Parish, West Central, Jamaica West Indies. She was one of several children born to this union.
While living in Jamaica, she met and married Hylton Gardner (predeceased). After their courtship, they married on December 28, 1957, and from this union, they had their first daughter (Heather). They moved from Jamaica to London, England, to continue working and began raising their family where their second daughter (Donnah) was born.
In late1968, after living in London, England, for a while, the family came to the United States and made arrangements to live in New York. While in New York, she worked at Holy family Church, Fresh Meadows, NY, where she cooked for the nuns but eventually settled at Waldbaums Supermarkets as a cashier in Queens, NY, until she retired after 29 years of continuous service in 1999.
She attended St. Albans Congregational Church United Church of Christ for years, where she faithfully attended service. She also enjoyed the many afternoon programs she attended with friends and family.
She was a woman of few words but always spread love wherever she went. She gave whatever she had, and that made her happy. People constantly referred to her as “Aunt Gwen” because she looked out for everybody and never asked for anything in return. She would sneak and give someone a love offering because they fixed something or ran an errand for her. She would even send you home with a meal, so you had something to eat. The family was her pride and joy. Once in a while, she called to check up on them and see what was new. When she would visit them, she felt at home, and when it was time to go home, she was so upset like this was the last time she would see them. That is how close she was to the family.
She is survived by her daughters Heather Boschert (Tom), Donnah Cole (Francis), and her grandchildren Damien (Heather), Andrew, and Danielle (Donnah). She also leaves to mourn two brothers (Cleveland and Winston) many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
May God bless and keep you now safely in the loving arms of God and your Savior Jesus Christ.
