Godfrey Joseph Spellen, born to Raymond Spellen and Yvonne “Mickey” Spellen in Georgetown, Guyana, brought laughter and joy to all who knew him. He was raised in Georgetown, where he attended St. Pius High School. In 1981, he immigrated to the United States and continued his education at George Wingate High School in Brooklyn, New York. He went on to build a life rooted in love, family, and dedication.
Godfrey was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Margaret LaRoche, and a proud and loving father to his children, Malik and Brianna, who were his greatest priority. He also leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his memory.
He is now reunited in eternal peace with his parents and his brothers Bernard, Roy, Compton, and Raymond. He leaves to carry on his legacy his siblings Euburn, Theresa, Anne-Marie, Eon, and Aubrey.
Godfrey was known for his warm, jovial spirit and his natural gift for making others laugh. Many would say he could have been a star comedian, as he lit up every room with his humor and presence. He had a way of turning ordinary moments into joyful ones, leaving people smiling long after he was gone.
Early in his life in the United States, Godfrey began his first job working at Häagen-Dazs in Brooklyn, New York. It was there that he formed lasting friendships and developed his love for connecting with people from all walks of life. Immersed in a diverse community, he became fluent in Spanish—something he carried with pride and used throughout his life to connect with others.
Godfrey later dedicated his career as an ambulance driver, where he became much more than just transportation for those in his care. The patients he transported to and from doctor’s appointments and dialysis treatments adored him. From the moment they stepped into his ambulance, he brought comfort, laughter, and light. He had a special gift—he didn’t just take people where they needed to go; he lifted their spirits along the way. Many looked forward to seeing him, knowing they would be greeted with kindness, humor, and a familiar joy that only Godfrey could bring.
A lifelong fisherman, Godfrey found peace and joy by the water—from his childhood days fishing along the Atlantic shores of Georgetown, Guyana, to quiet moments spent casting his line. His love for fishing was not only a pastime, but a reflection of his faith. He admired Peter in the Bible, a fisherman called by Jesus to become a “fisher of men,” and he carried that spirit in his own life—striving to live with purpose, faith, and a heart that could reach others. His family always knew that if they were looking for him, they could find him near the water.
Godfrey was a wonderful husband, a devoted father, a cherished brother, and a loyal friend. His life was a blessing, his love was a gift, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
“Godfrey Well done, good and faithful servant…enter into the joy of your Lord.” – Matthew 25:23
