Gloria Eloise Golding, referred to by her closest friends as "GG", departed from this world on Saturday morning, at exactly 8:00 AM, May 15th, 2021. The last time I saw her, my mother, was the afternoon of May 14th, at a nursing/rehab center relatively close to our home, where she was to return the following week.
She looked radiant, and was looking forward to coming home with me. Early the next day, she told her roommate and her nurse that Jesus told her he would come for her early that day. The nurse had arrived at around 7:45 AM, to help her dress, while exchanging customary jokes. She exchanged jokes, and informed the nurse that Jesus would be coming that morning for her. According to the nurse, she sat back, closed her eyes, and passed in less than a moment. The nurse exclaimed that her passing was the most gentle she had ever witnessed.
My mother was born in Kingston, on the island of Jamaica, in 1925. She was athletic and highly competitive, playing on the basketball team of her high school. She aspired to be a nurse, and subsequently moved to England to obtain her nursing degree. She practiced nursing in London, and eventually met her husband. They had two sons. After approximately 14 years residing in the UK, she took her sons with her to New York, to care for her mother. She later worked at Mt. Sinai and East Elmhurst General Hospital as a Senior Hematologist .
She was the best mother one could imagine. I am honored to be her son.
