In Loving Memory of My Mother, Georgette Roy
Born Melodie Therese Georgette Petit
March 3, 1931 – February 2, 2025
It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of my beloved mother, Georgette Roy, on February 2, 2025. She was 93 years old and lived a full, beautiful life filled with love, resilience, and wisdom. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, she later made her home in Cambria Heights, New York.
My mother was a woman of fierce independence. She grew up in a home filled with intellectuals and changemakers, shaped by the influence of her father, Georges J. Petit, a renowned journalist who was a fearless advocate of freedom of the press. She inherited his strength and unwavering spirit, always standing firm in her beliefs.
One of my favorite stories about my mother is how she made the bold decision, in 1965, to move to the United States in search of a better future for her family. She didn’t wait for permission—she simply told my father, Gerard, that she was going, and he, being the devoted husband he was, followed her. Their love was inspiring, a true partnership of equals. I will always cherish the memories of watching them dance together in our living room, completely lost in each other, as if the rest of the world didn’t exist. Or summer nights they’d spend listening to music as they talked for hours.
Mom was an incredible cook and baker—our house was always filled with the smell of her delicious meals, especially during the holidays when she made the most amazing cakes. Haitian Compas music was always playing in the background, setting the perfect atmosphere for the love and laughter that filled our home.
She leaves behind her children, my brothers Hans and Alix, and me, her daughter Astrid. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Georges, Emily, Julian, and Brendon, and my husband, Fernando Pinto. Her nieces, Yanick, Joelle, Maggy, Carole, and Sandra, and nephews, Rony, Fred, and Leslie, will miss her deeply, as will the countless friends and family who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mom, while my heart aches at the thought of life without you, I take comfort in knowing that you are now reunited with Lionel, the son you lost too soon, and with Dad, the love of your life.
Thank you for everything—the love, the lessons, the laughter. Thank you for showing me what it means to be strong and kind. I will miss you every day, but I will carry your spirit with me always.
Rest in peace, Mom. You are forever in our hearts.
