Etheline Lawrence Sharpe, affectionately known as Mama, Etty or Miss Lawrence by her friends and family, was born on November 10, 1938, in Westmoreland, Jamaica, to her beloved mother, Agatha Smith, whom she adored and spoke lovingly of until her final days. She was the youngest of five sisters, and from a young age, she displayed the warmth, resilience, and faith that would define her life.
Etheline carried her values of kindness, responsibility, and hard work throughout her journey. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, singing, attending church, and fashion. She built a meaningful career as a Home Health Aide, dedicating her life to caring for others with patience, compassion, and dignity.
She shared her life and many cherished years with her devoted common-law husband, Albert (Pawpa) Brown (in loving memory), with whom she built a foundation of love, respect, and family. She was a woman of great strength and grace, admired for her ability to face life’s challenges with courage. Her laughter filled the room, her wisdom guided many, and her unconditional love nurtured everyone she encountered. To know her was to feel cared for and valued.
Beyond her devotion to her immediate family, Etheline was also deeply respected in her community (Dela Vega City). She had a passion for politics and was an active voice in her community’s growth and direction. Her dedication to political efforts reflected her belief in fairness, justice, and opportunity for all. Whether through organizing, supporting candidates, or encouraging those around her to stay engaged, she gave generously of herself and lived a life of service and compassion.
Etheline was the proud matriarch of a large extended family, a role she embraced with grace and devotion. She not only cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, but also played a guiding role in helping to raise and shape the lives of many of them, ensuring her values and love carried through the generations. Her legacy continues through her children: Marlene, Andrea, Alton, and Leon; grandchildren: Tania, Donna, Dave, Michelle, Dwayne, Marsha, Trevine, and Lemar; great-grandchildren: Shanice, Shayvon, Chelsea, Tajay, Deanna, Marc, Danielle, Marisa (in loving memory), Dajanique, Danee, Teagan, Anisa, Analise, Denzel, Jaime, Ellise, Taryn, and Isaiah; and great-great-grandchildren: Gianna and Dream. She also leaves behind her sister, Barzelia Salmon, nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends who cherished her deeply.
Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure. She is loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
