Mr. Edward Ekow Van-Ess entered this world on September 4th, 1945, in Aboso, Western Region, to the late Mr. Isaac Kweku Esuon Van-Ess and the late Mrs. Regina Mame Efua Bodzie Van-Ess. He was the second-born and eldest son, proudly carrying the name of his paternal grandfather, Egya Edward Ekow Van-Ess. Within the family circle, he was affectionately known as Ekow.

His parents, devout Roman Catholics, instilled in him a deep reverence for education, enrolling him in Aboso Roman Catholic School. Ekow’s youthful spirit was marked by adventure and ingenuity; a trait remembered vividly when he ingeniously illuminated his father’s store using batteries and bulbs, earning him the moniker "electrical engineer."

In 1960, Ekow completed his Middle School form four examination, paving the way for admission into Saint Peter's Secondary School, Nkwatia-Kwahu after successfully passing his Advanced level GCE in 1967. His journey led him to teach chemistry at Tarkwa Secondary School before pursuing higher education at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. However, his path eventually led him to Liberia, and in 1972, he ventured to New York to reunite with his childhood friend, the late Tony Andoh.

It was in New York where he crossed paths with Nana Serwah Boatema (a.k.a. Grace Adjei), whom he would later marry in 1981. Together, they were blessed with three beautiful children Michelle, Margaret & Edward as well as Michael, into their lives. Recognizing the paramount importance of education, Edward pursued both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. With a steadfast commitment to hard work and leadership, he dedicated over three decades to work in healthcare administration. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church where he worshiped faithfully.

Edward’s passion for photography was a testament to his desire to immortalize cherished moments spent with loved ones. Among his favorite pastimes were watching sports, relishing family time (especially with his grandchildren), and savoring delicious burgers. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Nana Serwah Boatema, four children, and eight grandchildren, evidence to a life richly lived and deeply cherished.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
