July 31, 1940 – November 19, 2024
Monique Parinis Nazon, respectfully Dr. Nazon passed away peacefully on November 19, 2024, at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY. Born on July 31, 1940, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Monique was the second of eight children of Julia Andre Parinis and Camille Joseph Parinis. She spent her childhood in Haiti, where she attended Institution du Sacre Coeur de Turgeau (Sacred Heart Catholic School). Monique’s brilliance was evident early on; the nuns allowed her to skip two grades, making her the youngest in her class, studying alongside her older sister, Nicole. She graduated as Valedictorian of her school and went on to study at Université d’Etat d’Haiti, Faculté de Médecine et d’Art Dentaires (University of Haiti Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry).
While in medical school, Monique met the love of her life, Serge Nazon. The two married in Haiti on January 31, 1970, after completing their residencies, and began their journey together in the United States on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1970. They initially settled in New Jersey, where Monique worked as an anesthesiologist before moving to Cambria Heights, NY. In the early 1970s, she transitioned into Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, completing her fellowship and residency at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Creedmoor Psychiatric Center. Monique dedicated her career to this field until her retirement. She and Serge raised three children, Serge Jr., Marie-Monique, and Jennifer Lisa. Sadly, their son Serge Jr. passed away in 2004 after battling bone cancer.
Monique’s work as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist spanned various institutions, including South Beach Psychiatric Center, Covenant House, Queens Child Guidance Center, The Center for Rapid Recovery, and Brunswick Hospital Center. She also passionately served her community as President of the Haitian American Psychiatric Association, working to provide mental health services across Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island, and Staten Island.
Monique was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, godmother, friend, and colleague. Her warmth and kindness touched the lives of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Whenever she walked into a room, it wasn’t just her presence, it was an event. Her chic outfit, jewelry, hairstyle, and polished nails were her personal brand. No one would have dared to expect anything less than her elegance.
Predeceased by her parents, her son Serge Jr., and her siblings Edith Parinis Sylvestre, Camille Parinis Janvier, Nicole Parinis Romulus, and niece Tracey Lynn Janvier. Monique leaves behind her loving husband Serge, her daughters Marie-Monique, Jennifer Lisa, her grandson Kevin, her siblings Claude Parinis, Michelle Parinis Fleurimon, Yves Parinis, and Gladys Parinis and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, friends, and colleagues.
May her beautiful and giving soul rest in eternal peace. We will always love you.
