Anthony A. Jean-Michel (Papi) Obituary

OBITUARY

Anthony A. Jean-Michel (Papi), age 73 of Rosedale NY, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2022.

Anthony (Tony) Augustin Jean-Michel was born November 24, 1948, to Eve Jean Michel and Lucienne Pierre in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His father was an Electrician and his mother was a Business Merchant.  Anthony has five brothers: Jack, Daniel, Ulrick, Yves, Luc and one sister: Maude.  Anthony was educated at Saint Jean-Bosto and Lyce Firmin in Port-au-Prince.

Anthony married his loving wife, Nicole Jean-Michel in Port-au-Prince in 1979 and together they had four wonderful children: Sony, Yvans, Marcus, Cartilia. In Anthony’s early years he had a son: Rony Jean Michel.   Anthony absolutely adored his grandchildren: Nailah, Daquon Jr, Carli and Alia, Alexis & Derrick and several others who lives in Haiti.  His children & grandchildren called him “Papi”.  Nicole and Tony have known each other and been together for 54 years and she will miss his companionship dearly.

Anthony worked in the Bureau de SNEM as an Environmental Inspector travelling to different parts of Haiti to ensure Public Health safety and worked as an Administrator for DGE -Haitian Government Office of Taxes in Port-au-Prince. Anthony later worked in maintenance for Sheepshead Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Brooklyn, NY for 23 years until his retirement in October of 2008 and he was a proud Union member of 1199.

Before Anthony arrived in the United States in August 1981, he was a strong role model to many young men in his neighborhood in Port-au-Prince. Anthony was a strong father figure to his brothers and sister while his father lived in New York. When he came to New York Anthony went on many church retreats with his wife and family.  Anthony always loved nature and would often spend a great amount of time at the park and beach by himself and with his children. He enjoyed riding his bike and driving his car. Anthony enjoyed sharing a good story, watching movies, futbol (soccer) and to catch up on the news especially, Haitian News.  Anthony loved Haitian food and patties. He had a sweet tooth and enjoyed Haitian deserts like cake and douce. Anthony always smelled good – he loves his cologne and lots of it.

Anthony loved all kinds of music genre, from Haitian music to classical and gospel.  He had a lovely singing voice and enjoyed his Haitian music played very very loud.  Anthony loved to dance and loved to laugh.  Anthony’s most favorite thing was to spend time with his family especially his grandchildren—he always had a treat to give the grandchildren.  He would play music and have everyone in the house dancing and laughing. His children and grandchildren loved having fun with their Papi.  Anthony enjoyed flowers and vegetables in the garden at home, going anywhere with his wife, and talking with his neighbors. He was friendly to everyone he met.  Anthony was very kind and caring and he would think of ways to help others before himself. Anthony was joyful and enjoyed everything about life and living. His wife, children, grandchildren, and other family will remember all the love he gave them with his whole heart and soul.

Anthony is survived by his wife, Nicole Jean-Michel; his children Sony JM Thornton (Artis), Yvans Jean Michel (Julie), Marcus, Cartilia Stukes (Daquon), Rony Jean Michel and family of Haiti; grandchildren, Nailah, Daquon Jr, Carli and Alia, Alexis & Derrick and several others who lives in Haiti; siblings: Maude Jean-Michel, Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Jean Michel, Mr. & Mrs. Ulrick Jean Michel, Mr. & Mrs. Yves Jean-Michel, Luc Jean Michel; his God-Sister Annie Georges and family; Brother-in-law Claudel Charles and family & Ernst Sylvestre and Jean Robert Neptune and family; His nephews Uhry and Ricky; Anthony is preceded in death by his parents, Mother-in-law Lilia Sylvestre and brother Jack Jean Michel; brother-in-law Claude Sylvestre.
