Adeline Chery, nee Jean-Francois, was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti in 1940 as the fifth of seven children of Joseph and Leonie Jean-Francois. She attended National School: Caroline Choveau for her primary and secondary education, and pursued her lifelong love of singing and music at Christ Roi choir and Coeur Simidor.
Adeline left Haiti in 1963 and settled in New York. She continued to cultivate her love of music with the Saint Teresa Davila Choir where she later met her future husband, Joseph D. Chery. The two married in 1970 and went on to have two sons, Patrick and Frantz, and two grandchildren, Nadia and Nicholas.
Adeline worked as a secretary at Berkeley photo and later at Chase Bank as an international funds wire transfer agent for the rest of her career. After retiring she became a travel agent, incorporating her love of God into organizing trips to holy sites around the world.
A faithful Catholic, she imparted a spiritual foundation to her children, whom she involved in church activities throughout their upbringing, in addition to teaching them the values of hard work, courage and dedication. She believed in helping her community and was a pioneer member of Society for Haitian Research Inc., and was an active member of Haitian Brotherhood Association. A God fearing woman, she was also very active in her church community, particularly with the Legion and Apostle of Mary.
Adeline loved to spread joy and often did so through her love of singing and dancing. She passed away on December 12th, 2022, leaving a legacy of a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and most importantly a devout Catholic. Her infectious laugh and beautiful soul will never be forgotten.
