Joseph “Brother” Alexander Yhap loving husband, father and grandfather went home to Jesus on Thursday, May 2nd, 2019 at NYU Winthrop Hospital at 12:45AM, Long Island, New York at the age of 91. Joseph was born on February 4th, 1928 in Stanleytown Village, Guyana to Samuel William and Ellen (Low) Yhap. He was a loving and supportive brother to Ena (Yhap) Chee-a-tow and Inez (Yhap) Lie Piang who preceded him.
Joseph married Gladys “Gee” Basdeo on June 17, 1956, and had seven beautiful children, Ray, Fay, Kay, Gillian, Clinton, Gary and Sharon. Joseph immigrated to Ottawa, Canada in March of 1977 with his wife and family. He was a loving grandfather to Richard Lowe and Clayton Yhap, Hailey and Lindsay Yhap, Ellianna, Jayden and Addison Yhap, and James, Maya, Hannah and Aaron vanDijk. He was a caring father-in-law to Catherine (Payne), Tessa (Sears), Norman Nassrallah, and Ron vanDijk and a loving great grandfather to Caleon Lowe. He is beloved by his nieces and nephews Penny Cruise, Cheryl Goldberg, Keith Michael and Richard Chee-a-tow and his grand nephew and nieces Robin, Nicole, Kaia and Mia Cruise, Jennie Cruise and Kelly and Stelios Darzentas.
Joseph will be fondly remembered for his genuine hospitality, kindness and generosity to everyone. He was charismatic and charming. He was a gifted auto mechanic and entrepreneur. Joseph always sacrificed his needs for the good of his family, he was a selfless husband, father and grandfather. He had a quiet strength and was a spiritual man who firmly believed in grace and faith, he could be found reading his Bible daily.
Joseph will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
A home going service will be held on Sunday, May 5th, 2019 8:00 PM at O’Brien Sheipe Funeral Home at 640 Elmont Road, Elmont, NY 11003. Visitation will precede the service from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
